Cirque du Soleil - ZAiA
Throughout 2010/11 I have been working as a musician at the Cirque du Soleil show ZAiA. ZAiA was Cirque's first residency show outside the USA, based in Macau (China SAR - next to Hong Kong). ZAiA was a 90 minutes show about a young girl's dream of a space journey.
It was the first time I have truely gotten in touch with the art of circus. I have met the most wonderful and talented circus artists - acrobats, athletes, jugglers, dancers and actors - and I was one of the 9 members of the ZAiA band. For 15 months I shared a life in subtropical Macau with the big ZAiA family - consisting of about 80 artists and more than 100 technicians from all around the world, working inside the gigantic theater at the "Venetian" in Macau.
15 months of playing an average of 8 shows per week and being employed by a global enterprise is a true challenge for any artist: Staying focussed and inspired, to still evolve, develop and be inventive even after having played the show hundreds of times. If I were asked what kept the motivation going, I can only say that I have had the most wonderful people around me - we inspired each other, cheered each other up and had tons of fun.
I took this time as a unique life experience, which it certainly was for me.
And whenever I heard the children in the audience laugh, people cheering, yelling, laughing, crying and leaving the theatre full of joy and happiness it reminded me of what it is all about.
... And I enjoyed flying - playing the recorder 22 meters above the stage, hanging on a harness.
